1. Monastery of Las Huelgas Reales

It was built in the 12th-13th centuries by order of Alfonso VIII and his wife Leonor Plantagenet for the Cistercian order, and was a royal pantheon and a place of spiritual retreat for the ladies of the nobility of the time. The abbess was a member of the Royal Household. There were many privileges that this monastery obtained.

The complex consists of several parts: The church, the monastery and the enclosure area. It has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. Architecturally it responds to Romanesque art but with strong Mudejar influences.

You can see several royal tombs with really beautiful carved marble sculptures. Perhaps the most interesting is the Museum of Rich Fabrics that houses perfectly preserved medieval dresses and fabrics that give us an idea of the way of dressing and the richness of the costumes of the time.

2. Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña

It is a Trappist abbey located in Castrillo del Val, 10 km from the center of Burgos. In this abbey, on August 6, 953, its two hundred monks were martyred by the Muslims, known as the "Martyrs of Cardeña." It was in the cloister where, until the s. XIV a mysterious miracle took place that stained the earth crimson. You can visit the cloister, the church and the royal pantheon mixing different architectural styles.

According to the Cantar de mio Cid , before going into exile, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar left in San Pedro de Cardeña, under the protection of Abbot Sancho, his wife Doña Jimena and their daughters, although this fact is not attested by historical evidence.

According to tradition, in this monastery the horse of the Cid "Babieca" is buried. Now a stone monolith reminds us of this legend.

La Cartuja de Miraflores is a monastery built on a hill about three kilometers from Burgos.

It is a jewel of Elizabethan Gothic art. Its church with a western portal and its main altarpiece, the work of Gil de Siloe, stand out. A true wonder.

At the foot of the altarpiece we find a set of royal tombs by the artist Gil de Siloé commissioned by Queen Isabel la Católica and belonging to Juan II and Isabel de Portugal.

4. The Cathedral of Burgos

This impressive cathedral, declared a World Heritage Site, is one of the best examples of Gothic art in Europe. Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic patterns, although in later centuries it underwent some modifications. The cathedral houses works by extraordinary artists, highlighting the dome by Juan de Colonia, the altarpiece by Gil de Siloé and the Renaissance golden staircase by Diego de Siloé.

The Museum of Human Evolution (MEH) is located on the Paseo de la Sierra de Atapuerca, next to the Arlanzón River.

Designed by the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg, it is one of the most visited museums in Castilla y León. The MEH houses the archaeological remains from the Sierra de Atapuerca sites , constituting an international benchmark in relation to the evolutionary process of man, which to this day remains a great enigma to be deciphered.

6. The Castle and the Walls of Burgos

The Castle of Burgos is located on the hill of San Miguel elevated 75 m above the level of the city. Raised by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos in 884, at the time of the Reconquest.

It was built on the same site where there were two defensive towers.

Throughout history it served as a prison for illustrious figures such as the Kings García of Galicia and Alfonso VI of León. It also served as a gunpowder factory and was later blown up by Napoleonic troops.

Currently it is an Interpretation Center of the Castle of Burgos and a recreation park with streets dedicated to illustrious poets of the city.

7. Door of Santa Maria

Arco-Santa-Maria-Burgos.jpg

The Arch of Santa María is one of the most emblematic monuments of Burgos, which in the Middle Ages was one of the ancient twelve access gates to the city. This arch connects the Santa María bridge, over the Arlanzón river, with the Plaza del Rey San Fernando, where the cathedral stands.

The door was conceived as a great triumphal arch, as if it were an altarpiece carved in stone and with a crenellated finish as a castle. Inside the Arch, medieval stairs lead to the main hall, which has been renovated and is used as an exhibition hall. From this room you can access the Sala de Poridad, an octagonal room in which the Burgos council met until 1780.

8. The museum of Burgos and the Houses of Íñigo Ángulo, Miranda and Melgosa

The Burgos Museum is located inside the Renaissance palaces known as the Casas de Íñigo Ángulo, Miranda and Melgosa. The Casa Miranda houses the Prehistory and Archeology section and the Casa de Iñigo Angulo the Fine Arts section.

The Casa Melgosa and the building sites of the old Calatravas Cinema, not yet restored, will in the future be used for the Decorative Arts and Contemporary Art sections.

All the objects come from Burgos and its province. The urn of Santo Domingo de Silos stands out, considered the top piece of Romanesque goldsmithing in Christian Europe, the praying sculpture of Juan de Padilla, page of Queen Isabel la Católica, a 14th-century treasure from the old Jewish quarter of Briviesca, and many other objects of great value.

The Paseo del Espolón is the most central and popular wooded and landscaped promenade in Burgos. It was created at the end of the 18th century, being configured during the 19th century. It connects the Arch of Santa María with the Main Theater and is considered as the “living room” of the city.

The adjoining buildings were built on the old medieval wall and although they are from different periods, they form a harmonious whole. The house on the corner of the Plaza del Rey San Fernando, the work of Vicente Lampérez, stands out; the Consulado del Mar building, designed by the architect Manuel de Eraso; that of the Circle of the Union; the palace of the Marchioness of Vilueña, known as Casa de los Gaiteros.

10. Walk through Isla Park

It is a romantic walk that has a great botanical variety, as well as several monuments that are worth visiting. It is located on the right bank of the Arlanzón river and runs for about 800 meters, from the Malatos bridge to the Castilla bridge.

At the end of the 19th century, a colorful and artistic waterfall was built, using stalactites and stalagmites from the Atapuerca cave, forming an open grotto at the back of the pond. The rocky part is supported by two representative figures of as many mermaids.

In 2011, a total rehabilitation was carried out, which included the repair of monuments, improvement of gardens and promenades, as well as new urban furniture.
